Zimbabwe

For those seeking a genuine African safari experience, Zimbabwe delivers with its iconic parks and wildlife hotspots. The country, renowned as Africa’s top safari destination in the 90s, is experiencing a resurgence in safari tourism. The wildlife is thriving, and many expert guides are returning to share their knowledge.

Why We Love It

Zimbabwe’s national parks are world-renowned. Hwange, the largest park, is famous for its vast landscapes and large herds of elephants. Mana Pools, located along the Lower Zambezi, is celebrated for its walking safaris and three-day canoe trips. Victoria Falls, a top landmark, offers a variety of adrenaline-pumping activities such as white water rafting, bungee jumping, and helicopter flights, making it a must-visit.

As a more affordable option compared to some neighboring countries, now is the perfect time to explore Zimbabwe before prices rise to match those of Botswana.

Useful Information

How to Get Around
Due to the remoteness of many camps, most travelers use small charter planes for travel, offering a chance to see wildlife from the air. Road transfers are also recommended where possible to explore the country.

How to Get There
Fly into Johannesburg (a major hub) and then onto Victoria Falls or Harare, Zimbabwe. Direct international flights to South Africa are available from London Heathrow and major US hubs like Atlanta and New York. Some airlines now offer direct flights to Harare.

Is It for You?
Zimbabwe is ideal for traditional safari enthusiasts and those who appreciate exceptional guiding. It suits honeymooners, older families, and adventure seekers.

When Is Best?
Zimbabwe is a year-round destination with peak safari conditions between April and October, when it is cooler and the wildlife viewing is optimal as the bush dries up. October can be very hot. The rainy season from November to March is hot and humid with occasional thunderstorms, lush green landscapes, and active wildlife but Mana Pools is closed. Victoria Falls is spectacular year-round, particularly from April to June. White water rafting is best from August to December when the river is at its lowest.

What Should I Combine It With?
Zimbabwe works well as a stand-alone destination. For extended safari experiences, combine it with Botswana or Zambia. Victoria Falls is a great addition to a South African safari or Cape Town stay. For relaxation afterward, consider Mozambique, Mauritius, Madagascar, or Lake Malawi, with flights via Johannesburg.
