Thaka Valley Conservancy/ Loziba Wildlife Reserve is our current flagship conservancy project is a wilderness landscape located in Zululand, South Africa, which involves converting a total of circa 100000 hectares of wilderness landscape into a Communal Wild Conservancy(CWC) called Thaka Valley CWC, that will have at its heart, a 35000 hectare big 5 private game reserve called Loziba Wildlife Reserve. The reserve is being supported by the Human Elephant Foundation (www.humanelephant.org ), a South African-based NPO that focuses on supporting elephant conservation, including landscape development projects which clearly demonstrate their ability to protect elephant herds and preserve the spaces that they occupy and roam.

The Loziba Wildlife Reserve intends to become the home to a herd of 40 plus elephants, who currently have a cull order against them if they are allowed to continue to roam free between the rural villages in the area, whilst the reserve also intends to be a sanctuary for endangered species such as the black rhino, cheetah, pangolin and lion. Further information can be found on www.loziba.com
Why Loziba?
Thaka Valley Communal Wild Conservancy is a vast wilderness landscape located in Zululand, South Africa, which involves the converting of a total of circa 100000 hectares into a Communal Wild Conservancy (CWC) called Thaka Valley CWC.
Our goal is to help them to develop their conservancy to a point where they will have at its heart, a 30000-40000 hectare private game reserve called Loziba Wildlife Reserve. A true sanctum and safe haven where the Big 5 can call their home.
Our goal with Loziba is to grow and nurture this conservancy and community to a place where we can help them grow, and be able to create a true sanctuary for those critically endangered species such as the elephant, black rhino, cheetah, pangolin and lion.
Exploratory Itinerary
Encompassing mistbelt grasslands, thornveld and river frontage, Babanango Game Reserve is a bush lover’s paradise, and where the adventurous come to experience all things safari. This rich area harbours abundant game species including buffalo, giraffe, hyena, zebra, several antelope, and the elusive aardvark and aardwolf. Rhino and buffalo have recently been introduced to the reserve, with the remainder of the big five soon to be introduced.
Babanango Game Reserve is the largest conservation project of its kind over the last 30 years. Over 75% of the land is leased from the communities – which means that this partnership is one that empowers its people. The African Habitat Conservancy Foundation was founded as a means to assist and serve the immediate communities around the reserve, and truly is the heart of the reserve.
Please remember we specialise in bespoke tours and this is merely a guideline for you. We will happily design a full itinerary for you as an addition to the exploratory section of this tour.

This is an anti-poaching technique used throughout Kwazulu-Natal due to high prevalence of poachers. Activities There are many options here to keep you busy including five game-viewing & guided bush walks; daytrips to the nearby iSimangaliso Wetland Park & to Ocean beaches. Embark on ZapWing anti-poaching flight over Kwazulu-Natal departing Hluhluwe airbase. This is an aerial surveillance flight to ensure security in 26 states and private game reserves (+300,000ha). Rhino and elephant tracking in the surrounding area. Join the specialized mounted unit of the anti-poaching rangers on horseback while they patrol the Hluhluwe–iMfolozi Park to secure white and black rhinos. These mounted rangers can patrol off-road and have a higher vantage point, helping them to see above the long summer grass. The horses are quiet and the extends the daily patrol from 10km on foot to 30km on horseback. As a result, rangers are far less fatigued. Battlefields tour Early in the 19th century King Shaka transformed his hardly significant Nguni clan into a proud and powerful nation. Born the illegitimate son of King Senzangakhona of the Zulu community and Nandi of the Langeni community and rejected by Senzangakhona, Nandi and Shaka sought refuge with a paternal uncle living with the Mtetwa people, who were ruled by Dingiswayo. Shaka gained valuable experience whilst undergoing military training in Dingiswayo’s iziCwe Regiment. He developed innovative skills in warfare and introduced the iklwa stabbing spear to the armoury. On the death of Senzangakhona, Dingiswayo supported Shaka’s claim to the throne. Shaka assassinated his half brother and assumed leadership of the Zulu. When the Ndwande under Zwide defeated and killed Dingiswayo, Shaka absorbed the leaderless tribe into the Zulu. Zwide then attacked the Zulu but under Shaka’s brilliant leadership at the Battle of Gqokli Hill in April 1818 the Zulu army defeated a numerically superior Ndwandwe force and ended their threat to the Zulu nation. After the superiority of the Zulu Nation had been entrenched under Shaka’s leadership, they extended their power base to cover all of what is now KwaZulu-Natal 1n 1828, Shaka was assassinated by his half-brothers Dingane and Mhlangana and he was succeeded by Dingane. Dingane saw the increasing influence of the whites in Port Natal as a threat, exacerbated by the arrival of the Voortrekkers over the Drakensberg range of mountains. The stage was set for more conflict. The role played by Shaka still inspires pride among the Zulu people. During his twelve year reign he built and led a powerful army, while setting new cultural standards for his people. Historians acknowledge his military leadership and prowess in developing new weapons and tactics such as the short stabbing spear and the battlefield strategy izimpondo zankomo or “horns of the beast” encircling tactic. Despite understandably subjective Victorian criticism, contemporary accounts from shipwrecked sailors in the 18th century and early hunters and adventurers describe the Zulus with whom they came in contact as cheerful, prosperous and law-abiding people.
